The Amazon Solution for eBay Sellers

eBay is a great marketplace for buyers and sellers. While I don’t remember my first purchase on eBay, I do remember my first sale… a Brother thermal paper fax machine I no longer needed. That was in 1997.

Since that time, I’ve purchased hundreds of items on eBay and sold 10’s of thousands of items under various user ids. Some were hobby related and some were business related. And I still buy and sell there today.

But what used to be lots of fun has lately become a bit of a chore. As any long time seller knows, for years, we could count on eBay to have an annual hike in fees charged to sellers and a variety of minor changes - nothing to really rock the boat in any significant way.

But long time sellers also know that in the past year, eBay has begun a dramatic transformation of its marketplace - adding things like detailed seller ratings, removing the ability of sellers to leave feedback, a new default search that works differently for auction listings and fixed price listings by some not well explained formula and many other changes that makes it harder for sellers to understand exactly what they are getting for their advertising investment.

In other words a fun, reasonably predictable marketplace is now a marketplace in flux. It is much harder to make long term business plans based on eBay because we are told to expect even more changes.

It is still a good place to make sales but for people who use is as their primary source of income, this series of upheavals presents great challenges.

In fact, if you are a seller on eBay and not selling anywhere else, you may find your livelihood at risk.

Luckily for you, there is another marketplace that allows you to sell your goods. One that is stable and hasn’t gone through all these upheavals. That marketplace is Amazon.

Like eBay, selling on it can be quite easy if you know what you are doing. Amazon lets you sell your goods with no listing fees, the have a different customer base than eBay so there is very little overlap and there is less price sensitivity on Amazon because customers on Amazon are purchase minded, not auction bid minded.
